Stephen Graham, 51, bursts into tears live on air as Netflix Adolescence star shares rare family insight: ‘I’ve gone!’
Stephen Graham broke down in tears live on the radio today as the Adolescence star opened up about his family.
The 51-year-old, who stars in and co-created the hit Netflix drama currently topping the streaming platform, became visibly emotional during a conversation with Capital Radio breakfast show on Wednesday, March 19.
Speaking to hosts Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby, the Scouse actor reflected on his dad being his biggest supporter.
“They supported me throughout everything,” he commented as he talked about his father on the show.
Sharing the moment he told his dad about working with Robert De Niro on Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman, he recalled: “I had posters on my wall of Taxi Driver that my dad had got me.”
“And then you went on to work with him,” host North pointed out.
“Can you imagine…” Graham began before Welby enthused: “Telling your dad.”
“Can you imagine what that phone call was like?” the actor exclaimed.

“I actually can’t, it must have been the proudest moment,” Welby remarked.
Recalling the conversation, Graham shared: “I went, ‘Dad, you’ll never guess who I’m going to be working with,’ and he’s like, ‘Who?’ and I went, ‘Marty’s asked me to do a film again,’ and he’s like, ‘That’s amazing son!’
“And I went, ‘Yeah’,” as he became tearful, Graham admitted: “Woah…I’ve gone!”
Rubbing his eyes, he continued: “My dad… You know, he proper backed me. And my mum. They supported me throughout everything.
“Do you know what I mean? All the struggles you go through and everything.”
As he continued to dry his eyes, the actor explained: “My contact lens has fallen out… And he was, yeah… You can imagine, it was unbelievable.”
“Did he believe you?” Welby probed, to which Graham answered: “Yeah, he did. He was so proud.”
“We didn’t want to make you cry today!” North told the actor sympathetically.
“That’s alright, you got my contact lens out!” he laughed.
Graham is just one star of the new Netflix drama to be on the receiving end of heavy praise since Adolescence arrived on the platform last week.
The filming aspect of the show has also garnered recognition as each episode was shot in just one take, with viewers feeling part of the action as they followed the characters swiftly and realistically.
Partially revealing how they made it work, Adolescence’s writer Jack Thorne explained to Deadline: “We strapped a camera to a drone that took off over traffic lights and then suddenly you’re at the murder scene. Emotionally it kicks you in the stomach.”
