Marianne Faithfull dies at 78 as tributes pour in for singer and actress

Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78.

Her spokesperson confirmed the news on Thursday, explaining Faithfull died in London surrounded by family.

They stated: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull.

“Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family.

“She will be dearly missed.”

London-born Faithfull was best-known for her ’60s song, As Tears Go By, which reached the UK top 10 in 1964.

Floods of tributes have filled social media, with one writing on X: “RIP b****y legend, Marianne Faithfull.”

“And another kick in the childhood. RIP Marianne Faithfull,” a second shared.

Another commented: “A wonderful woman who I had the pleasure of meeting many moons ago and she was such a dream. A sad day for us Brits. Sending my thoughts to her friends and family. #british #singers #hampsted.”

“MARIANNE FAITHFULL NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,” a fourth fan remarked.

“Sad news about Marianne Faithfull this evening. I heard her song As Tears Go By driving home from work,” one X user added.

Someone else posted: “I’m sorry to hear about the passing of Marianne Faithfull.

“She was a talented artist who left a lasting impact on the music and film industry. Her unique voice and style will be remembered by many for years to come. May she rest in peace.” (sic)
